An Explanation of the Stages of Building a Pool in Hawaii

Who wouldn’t love to have a beautiful pool on his or her property? We think a pool is a necessary luxury here in the Hawaiian Islands. Having a family pool creates more privacy for homeowners and their friends and families.  And pools can be built in an endless number of shapes, designs, and types.

Now is the time to find out all about the ins and outs of constructing the pool you have wanted.

Stage 1

Decide on the best time of the year to build your pool. Most contractors like to install in winter since this is the time of year when contractor’s projects slow down due to school attendance, holiday responsibilities, and a lessening of significant construction work during this busy time. This fact can also mean that contractors may be more likely to offer clients an enticing price on the project.

Additionally, the end of the year is an excellent time to find bargains on material prices before the costs are re-adjusted for the new year.  Since many construction workers are less busy during this season as well, you’re likely to have your pool installed in a shorter amount of time. The only speed-bump is that Hawaii is particularly wet during the winter, so this could cause some delays.

Stage 2

When the idea of building a pool in your backyard becomes stuck in your head, it’s important to remember the following issues:

  • Does your budget allow for installing a pool?
  • Are there zoning restrictions in your neighborhood?
  • What do you need to know about safety and insurance?

Stage 3

Understandably, the design of the pool comes first. The plan includes the location of the water feature, the landscaping around the swimming pool,  removal of trees, if necessary, and more. There are scores of options when it comes to creating your pool, so a design plan must be in place.

Stage 4

Obtaining the necessary permits and submitting them has to occur. Depending on the location of your property, processing times for permits can vary.

Stage 5

What type of pool do you prefer, and what materials do you want to use when building your pool?  Materials and types of pools include:

  • Fiberglass underground pools
  • Concrete underground pools
  • Vinyl-lined underground pools
  • Above-ground pools
  • Infinity pools
  • Lap pools
  • The size of the pool
  • The landscaping you want for the surrounding area

Stage 6

Homeowners will want to choose the location of their new swimming pool. With building a pool in Hawaii, a large part of this decision depends on the zoning and building restrictions for swimming pools in the Islands. They must take into consideration the removal of any trees or shrubbery that are within the parameters of the proposed pool site.  Some clients may want to remove trees and shrubs that might shed debris into the pool.  They will have to decide if they are willing to have any outlying sheds or workshops demolished or moved to make room for the addition of the water feature.

Stage 7

Excavation begins (we call this step the “dirty work”). Then equipment, plumbing, reinforcement, wiring (with the necessary grounding) are installed. Water features and additional landscaping can begin, along with decking, pavers, and other landscaping design desired.

Stage 8

The next phase is coming to grips with the maintenance that comes with having a private pool. You may choose to have a monthly maintenance visit from one of the many such companies on the Islands. Lucky for you,  Hawaiians do not have to bother with winterizing their pools, but there is equipment that might need replacing from time to time, and utility bills may increase.

  2. Hi, we are trying to decide whether to build our own pool or purchase a swim spa from the mainland to install. We still need to prepare the land for either one. Request your advice on the matter as well as getting permit for both. Our yard is already fenced-in and we are planning to buy a cover for the pool so that should cover safety. We’ve spoken to Gemini Pool, Aquatic Solutions, Endless Pools and Hydropools Hawaii. We look forward to hearing from you.
